The theatre of Epidaurus is one of the wonders of the ancient world — a near-perfect amphitheatre of the fourth century BC whose acoustics are so precise that a word spoken on the stage carries clearly to the highest of its roughly fourteen thousand seats.

It was built as part of the Sanctuary of Asclepius, the most important healing centre of antiquity, where the sick travelled from across the Greek world to seek cures in the god’s name — making this as much an ancient hospital as a religious site.

Each summer the theatre comes back to life for the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, when ancient tragedies and comedies are staged on the very ground they were written for — an experience worth planning a whole visit around.

About a 45-minute drive from the villa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Epidaurus pairs extraordinary architecture with a living tradition, and sits naturally on the same route as Mycenae and Nafplio.
